THE MOVIE

Melinda’s husband Hal had found out about the Eros Hotel through a friend and had broached the idea to her several weeks before. “I want to make a porno flick with us as the stars,” he said. “Remember I told you about the Eros Hotel? That place Don told me about? Well, they’ll do it for us. They’ll have someone take the pictures and, when we’re done, give us the only copy of the tape to watch over and over.” Melinda noticed that his voice trembled with expectation. “It’s a bit pricey, but I would really love to do it.” He got his patented little boy gleam in his eyes. “Would you do it with me?”

Melinda thought about it. Hal always fancied himself a great lover and he’d been that once. Sadly, in recent months he’d become predictable, but Melinda had learned to be content with it. She’d read books about how to spice up a relationship and nothing she’d read had done much good. Maybe this would be a way to put the spark back into their love life.

“How much?”

She watched Hal take a deep breath. “I talked them down to fifteen hundred, including the tape.”

He’d already talked to them. He really did want this, and it might just do the trick. Fifteen hundred dollars, a lot of money; it would be a small price to pay for help in the bedroom. “Not as bad as it might be, and we do have your bonus.”

“It was two thousand originally but I told them how much you wanted it.” That little boy grin again. God, he handled her, but in this case she wanted to be handled. “I told them it was for your birthday.”

“My birthday isn’t until April.”

“I know that, and you know that, but the lady at the Eros Hotel doesn’t know that. Would you do it?”

She sighed and grinned. She loved Hal completely, and she knew he loved her, too. “Sure. I’ll give it a try.”

Hal beamed. “That’s great. I’ll set it up.”

One evening two weeks later Hal and Melinda arrived at the simple brownstone that housed the Eros Hotel and were admitted by a large man in a plaid shirt and jeans. He checked their names on a list, then guided them to the third floor and into a simple room with a bed, dresser and several chairs. As the man closed the door, a woman stepped out of an alcove on the far side of the room. “Hi. My name’s Joyce and I’ll be helping you two with the film this evening. I’ll do as much or as little as you like.”

“What does that mean?” Hal asked.

“Some people want me to just take the pictures and remain totally silent. Others want me to tell them how to arrange for the best shots and still others want me to direct all the action.”

“I don’t think we need direction,” Hal said quickly.

“It might be fun to have someone make things more interesting. You know, do some different stuff,” Melinda said.
